Hey everybody and welcome to UNHINGED with me Steve Lichtman. Today’s episode simply put, live your life. Now what does that mean? It can mean a lot of things know whether you’re living your life to the best of your abilities whether you’re living your life in a way that you see fit whether you’re living a life that’s not yours and you’re doing it because it’s the grind you need to do, whether it’s to provide for yourself, for your family, parents, whatever it could be the situation that you’re in, you know, we all need to live our lives and what I’d like to talk about today even if it’s just a short episode. It doesn’t have to you know, I don’t have massive stories lined up I started using post it notes after reading an article about organizing your thoughts. I have one two inch by two inch square, blue post it note and all it says on it is live your

1:00
Life so let’s think about that for a minute Are you

1:05
are you living your life on your terms the way you want it to be? Or are you living your life on somebody else’s terms or something else’s turn you know like whether it’s maybe your job your job could be holding you back your job could be forcing you to live your life in a way that you don’t want to live whether it’s the schedule the commute there’s so many variables out there and in a world where the virtual labor force it’s only growing by the day by the minute more and more companies are allowing remote workers companies that never did before and now allowing their employees to work remote and I have a couple of friends that are that’s the case where they they went for maybe five years ago never working remote to now having a day or two a week where the remote

1:47
does that make your life better I mean that would be an opinion for some people they want to be in an office listen everybody says to me they’re amazed I’m not you know, schmoozing around in office. But the reality is, I would never get anything done.

2:00
You know, like, I know me, I wouldn’t get anything done in an office environment. I hated working in the city. You know, the years that I worked in Manhattan, I absolutely hated it. It was a nightmare. And not only did the commute completely, not worth it for me, but just the environment, the environment of sitting there with, you know, people that you would never talk to in another situation. And now because you’re on the same floor in the same cubicle quadrant. Now, you’re stuck talking to these assholes at the water cooler and you don’t give a fuck and you’re staring at them, and you’re all dressed the same and you’re all acting the same and you all look the same, and you’re all making the same reports for different departments or different products or different things. And you’re stuck, man, you’re stuck in a cubicle life and for what for what purpose? You’re basically enslaving yourself to another master now I get it. It’s money. Money drives everything man Don’t be fooled people for the most part to everything for money. And that sucks man that’s really unfortunate.

3:00
Because I think what happens with a lot of people and you know, there’s that guy the motivational speaker and entrepreneur and bullshit extraordinary. Gary Vee Gary van der Chuck yo he’s got a media company and he runs around us talk to us and listen this guy’s make him back he’s not stupid that’s one thing he’s not he is absolutely no smart a smart can get he’s a different type of intellect. He’s maybe not a book smart as much as a street smart kind of cat. But he’s very honest. Right? And it’s very similar in the sense that you know, you listen to him on on Instagram videos are on YouTube or whatever. It’s more f bombs. And me I mean, Jesus. I thought I was the most vulgar human being I know that I started watching this motherfucker. And I was like, God you’re doing this to like 10 million people fucking a man Why not? What he says is really smart. If you’re not doing something that you love and you’re passionate about well then why the fucking doing it. Now. Some people have great jobs. They love it. It’s exactly what they want.

4:00
to do with their life and those people should absolutely continue it and do it and retire from it and just that’s what they want to do with their life and they have that knowledge they have that focus that drive there that’s just where they’ve always wanted to be in a new that was where they wanted to go well then that’s perfect man cuz that’s what everybody else is looking for so for the rest of the lot what are you doing you sitting in a cube just looking around no windows just looking at the next cube going well hey man hello there next cue person what are you not caring about what you’re doing today that’s what it ends up being like now it’s not a realistic thing to tell people will hey listen just go quit your job and and you know join the circus or go quit your job and you can be an entrepreneur and in 10 Easy Steps what’s that guy that killed himself in prison Danilo pre if you just play some tiny classified ads and use my course you too can be living in the Bahamas and be a millionaire overnight. Obviously in

5:00
He went to he was getting the middle of going to jail for like $50 million in fraud of all different kinds and then killed himself in prison the day before his trial so I would definitely not recommend throwing it all in the air and saying fuck it man and you know like you want if you won the lottery man listen you win the lottery you know go have a marching band and tell your boss to suck it you know do what you gotta do i mean that’s that’s you know if I was in an office in one a lot or absolutely be doing that I probably wouldn’t have a marching band I’d have Steel Panther and you know Michael star would come out and Lexi would be there and sticks and yeah, I mean, sacks, you know, that the whole band would be their fucking rock and do it. It would be amazing. And I would have I would pay them to write a song just for that one day and it would be worth every fucking penny. But I don’t work in a cubicle. I haven’t won the lottery. So we have to live with what we’re in. And you know me personally, I’m happy with my work life balance. You know, I work at night which has always been good at it allows me to do things like this so I want

6:00
Do something I have a passion for. Am I making a million dollars a year podcasting? Absolutely not i’m not making any money podcasting my goal here isn’t a financial goal my goal is that I want to build something because I’m crazy and I’m driven and I’m motivated and I know that what I want to do is create an experience for people that helps them open up their eyes not always funny stories listen you know the diarrhea story is hilarious and for anybody that’s catching this is their first episode you can go on iTunes and you can go on my website at unhinge pod calm and and watch and listen to the other I have diarrhea episode it’s hilarious i mean i think it is at least it’s it was a story that I couldn’t make up on my greatest day I’m not that good of a writer but in those stories are great and I’m going to have got a lot of them listen up my one note files on story so I’m going to be telling is just pages long you know, with bullet points and reference points in

7:00
is getting all my material together. And it’s been a Herculean task to do that. And I’m always working on it. But the other part of what I want to do besides telling funny stories and making people laugh is is something that I that I actually do during my evening hours. And not that I want to work because I’m not here to work. And that’s not my goal. And I’m not asking people for to join a program or if you sign up today, you’ll get three new free offers. And all the prices end in seven and you have 11 and a half minutes to make a decision or the price is going to triple No dude, come on the fuck out of here. That’s not what I’m all about. What I want to do is I want to impart upon the people that listen that they can do it no matter what it is, man, it’s I deal with people sometimes where their businesses are completely in the toilet where they haven’t gotten business in 18 months, you know, when they’re just sitting there and and they spent money on the process that I’m a part of, and listen, I’m not going to get into what I consider the value of

8:00
The process or any of that, it doesn’t matter. I’ll never even name it because it’s just not what I’m here for. But one of the things that they do get in the part of that process is they get one on one time with me, where I help try to break down what’s failing and motivate them to just get up off their ass and start making changes. Man take massive action. And I know everybody says that you got to take massive action, but what it’s going to happen otherwise, you’re going to sit on your hands, searching the internet looking at cat videos and wonder well, I’ve got a great idea. I want to make a new plunger for toilets that’s hands free. And it’s going to be super clean, and nobody’s gonna get poop on them. And you won’t need to. It’s kind of built in poop knife. look that one up on the internet. Folks. If you haven’t heard about that, I never heard of a poop life until about six months ago. And I’ve been just completely in amazement ever since it’s just just look up boot knife and look for poop life stories. That’s all you want to do. Go to Reddit. Go look for poop life stories. And there’s probably a whole subreddit of that I mean, I think

9:00
Don’t even know I’ve never looked. I read a couple stories about it. And I was just completely amazed. But, you know, if you had a dream or a vision, that was something along those lines, where you had an item that you wanted to create, and you’re sitting in a cubicle, you know, doing your 40 hour, you know, prison term every week, and you’re doing you’re on top of that, you’ll five days say you do in two hours of commuting a day. That’s another 10 hours. So now you’re up to 15 hours. And then you add in all the times and the cost of everything else you got to do, whether it’s dry cleaning, whether it’s those weekly haircuts to look, you know, keep it high and tight. Know, lower your ears and all that john has long hair, dude, I don’t have to worry about that at least. Right. I don’t have to sit there and wonder if my if my hair is getting out of place. It’s always at a place. It’s everywhere. It’s in every place. So that’s a whole nother world. Man. If you’ve got that idea, and you just sit on it for years, and we’ve listened. We’ve all had ideas. I’ve wanted to do something like this. When I first went to college in the early 90s, I went for radio broadcast at the New York

10:00
Institute of Technology here in Long Island. And when I went there, and I signed up as a communications major, and that was my goal. I wanted to be the next howard stern. I wanted to be completely chaotic. I was wide eyed, crazy young man. And that was what I wanted to do. Clearly, that didn’t happen if I’m now starting a podcast and 2018 and now into 2019, that that wasn’t the course that I ended up on. I ended up shifting to psychology and then working in business. So things change what you wanted to do 20 years ago, maybe didn’t happen originally. Now if you have a dream would you give it up?

10:41
If you wanted to start a band we’ll learn an instrument I’ve been learning guitar for about a month now I totally suck I’ve own guitars for the better part of 30 years and never knew how to play one. I just always wanted one. You know when I would hang out my friends I would you know, saying or whatever and using my voice like always.

11:00
I always wanted to play guitar. And I watched my friends play and be like, that’s badass. And I just never learned I never spent the time. And lately I’ve been spending a couple hours a week. I mean, it’s not a lot. I’m not practicing as much as I should be. But I’m learning. I’m never going to be good enough. Like, I don’t want to start a band. So that’s not my goal. I just want to have fun with it. I just want to be able to do it enough that I can make what’s in my head maybe make some intros here for the show and stuff like that. I would be over the moon happy if a year from now I released a new intro to the podcast that was you know strummed by yours. Truly, that would be the type of thing where I’d be like, yeah, that’s a goal for me, the podcast here in the in the website that backs it. That’s kind of the goal of what I’ve been wanting to do for a while. And, you know, I was telling myself last year where my kid went to kindergarten, I really needed to spend that year just kind of going through all the crap that I’ve been doing the last 15 years that have been fun things, things for me, a lot of them involve puppetry, so I done a bunch of new videos. I edited some old ones things from 1015 years ago when

12:00
first started getting into puppetry and and learning how to not be a puppeteer. I don’t really give a fuck about being a puppeteer I like creating so it was making the characters you have made a mascot. I’ve made dozens of Puppets even more I’ve made I’ve made to the flat puppets that were a whole different thing that something I actually am still working on. That’s the one thing that actually out of all that kept up doing because I like that it doesn’t take a lot of space man. Once the kids get older. If you don’t have any kids, you only get it if you’ve got kids one or more doesn’t matter you realize how much space they take up with all their shit it’s just everywhere my office which was supposed to be quote unquote mine in the wife’s, you know, desk on each side, which granted become more mind because I work from home. So I’ve taken over a lot more of it. You know, that’s that’s happened. But there was a craft table that became a Lego table my bookshelves. Two out of five rows now have my daughter’s books. He’s got probably 100 some odd books on those two shelves on more but you know, what are you going

13:00
Do tell you know, you can’t put your books there, you can’t read, put them in the attic, put them in a garage, of course that you want them to have that you want them to learn. You wanted to do their thing. So this podcast is my thing. So back to that plunger, right, you sitting there with the plunger with the poop knife that comes out of the middle and you invented it. You said in your garage for fucking months. And you invented it. You still work in the grind, man, what are you going to do?

13:25
You gotta just give up that dream. We’re going to work a little bit more. Maybe you don’t take lunch anymore. So you get out of our early get home before the traffic. So maybe you end up saving another 20 minutes on your commute. So now you basically bought yourself an hour and a half a day. But you can now use to chase your dream. Maybe stay up a little later, after the kid goes to bed. Instead of bingeing something on Netflix, maybe you binge something for yourself and that’s what I’ve been doing Now listen, I we all watch TV, right? or sports or whatever it is that we’re into everybody kind of views something for entertainment at some point, even people that say that

14:00
Don’t watch TV, they maybe they go to games. Maybe they do something that’s entertaining, but they go to nobody lives the life devoid of all entertainment. If they do Christ they’re probably killing people. But you want to maybe take a little bit of that time away and focus it on what’s good for you and what’s good for your life and what’s good for your future. And your family. If you came up with an invention and they hit big, and you sold it on cue VC to that lady from Shark Tank, Lori whatever, that whatever her last name was, I don’t know you would go from guy in garage making poop knives to know guy owning factory making thousands of poop knives. And there’s nothing wrong with that. If that was what your dream is. Well, then you gotta do it. If you want to become a fitness instructor, and you’ve been going to the gym for 20 years, and you’ve been learning everything, start writing it all down. Make Your Own Book, start taking pictures, do whatever you gotta do. map it all out. You got a friend that can draw, have them draw the poses. If it’s yoga, have them draw the poses out you’ll come up with something original that

15:00
Your variety and your flavor of what you’re doing because everything’s repurposed in this day and age, there’s nothing there’s nothing new anymore. Even at poop knife, you know, it’s really still just the same thing that you stick with that plunger that’s got that little metal steak we press the button in the little like like, like an alien’s and then the little mouth the second mouth comes out of the mouth. You know, that’s like a tool used to get clogs out of like a toilet. It’s really essentially that but with a knife life. So it’s a plunger with a knife. It’s like a bigger version of that. So when you really look at anything, there’s another version of it, there’s another iteration of it. So don’t be worried about it. Don’t let it hold you back. Just do what you need to do for yourself. Then create something you know take something that’s in your mind that’s been there

15:44
and make something from it you can do it everybody can do it. It’s just a matter of convincing yourself not only convincing yourself having people that will support you you know I’m lucky people you know around me support what I’m doing. I think a lot of you that listen at least the ones that

16:00
Already Know Me and have known me from before this was new. I think you’re all probably just sitting there with bated breath wondering, what the hell is he going to say next? What is the next episode going to be about? You know, is it going to be funny? Is it going to be crazy? Is it going to be something that triggered me locally that then became something on this that ends up going out to the world? You know, it’s for me it’s one of those things where I’ve got a lot of plants like I said in the past I still have guesses a plan it’s a down a road plan. It’s not a today planets. You know, it’s something where I was going to do like a local business podcast too. But then I thought about it I was like, I really don’t want to split my time up, you know, even with the whole get a monkey saga that happened with the neighbors like I’m not gonna sit there and you will make graphics and we’ll make sure to whatever another sell them through the podcast site. The more I thought about it, I don’t want to make these these other ideas take away from my main idea, which is my podcast and my delivery and working on how I do

17:00
This and and building my skill set and making this entertaining, right? You want to listen, you don’t want to just sit around and industry wow said a whole lot of nothing again that’s not what I want it to be. So I want you to live your life and that’s what this is all about today I just want you to take something that you really really love and you listen if you want to hit me up on Twitter or Instagram or Facebook and send it to me and tell me what it is your go to the contact page on the site, send me an email, whatever you want to do, man, it’s cool. Let me know what you want to do. Does anything I can do to help you. By all means shoot me alive. I’d be happy to talk about it. You got something cool You want me to talk about and tell people about to get your feedback. Let’s do it. Now. It’s that’s what it’s all about. Man. It’s if you don’t put it out there and you don’t cry when you got nobody to blame but yourself because you’ve just done absolutely nothing but sit on your hands and sit in a cubicle and just be mad at the world around you because didn’t fall in your lap. And it didn’t just happen for you. Nothing’s going to happen for you. If you don’t grab it. You’re

18:00
Self. That’s just the truth. And we look at the people that have the biggest success. Look at guys like the rock. He started out as a football player for a college team basically didn’t make it as a pro. I don’t even know if he was drafted. I really I never looked, you know, I just don’t care. But you hear him tell the story all the time that he was sitting there in Hawaii with $7 in his pocket and look at them now, you know,

18:21
from very humble beginnings of eating a plate of rice with, you know, some boiled chicken to still eating that same boiled chicken and rice, but only because he’s a monster workout dude. And he’s, it was ridiculously fit. It’s the same concept. If you keep working hard at what your dreams are. Even if it’s in the times around what you have to do to make your life happen. Don’t you owe it to yourself to do that, you know,

18:44
just whatever it is you need. Don’t you owe it to yourself to figure that out, even if it’s something you’ve never done before. I hear a lot of people tell me and I used to do web development, right? And I hated it. The thing that I hated about it was that people would come to me with their ideas and their dreams.

19:00
They had no focus at all. Just like this is my idea. I just want whatever. I just wanted to make a lot of money. They had no no hard at it. There was no harder soul in that whatsoever. It was literally them just saying, I have a crappy idea and I’m going to pay you a really little amount of money and I’m going to nickel and dime you to just

19:20
to be able to bitch and moan at it didn’t make me millions of dollars, because my idea sucked anyway. I would much rather work with people with passion that want to live that life. You know, they want to live your life and do it well and do it. You only get one shot.

19:38
So what are you waiting for? Turn this fucking podcast off, man. Get up. Get out of your cubicle. Go take a walk. Go. Think about something you want to look at your phone. Open up your Notes app. If you’re on an iPhone or if you’re on a Google open up whatever the equivalent is. Take some notes about what you want to do with your life. Take some notes about what your dreams are and what your aspirations are.

20:00
where you want it to be one year, five years, 10 years down the track, that’s it guys. You got unhedged pod calm. The website got everything there. blogging, still blogging. Every once in a while, posted something new up.

20:13
I’m going to post up the setup here. Because I think people might like to see where the magic happens. It’s still completely unfinished. But I’m willing to share. You can also find me online on all social media worlds that I am Lichtman @iamlichtman.

20:31
they’re just I am Lichtman on social media, seeds, everything so.com. Nowadays, you’re just predisposed to saying that. But it’s Valentine’s Day. So I gotta go. I’m going to be at the school and be humble Valentine’s Day. And then that Thursday robotic class. Once again, I’m going to go over to my local pizzeria Supremes here in town and talk to the owner Kenny, who’s a nice dude going to order up a heart pizza right now so I can pick it up later in the evening and hopefully skirt around the lines. I help promote him on Instagram. I’m always tagging

21:00
You’re listening to this You bastard you know I’m going to keep pushing your brother cuz I love you guys are good you make nice food and you’re good people and you get to the community so that’s the least we can do is be good to you right that’s what it’s all about man it’s all about helping out the people that a nice the people that are good to you be good right back to them build your community the only way you’re going to build it is by doing it yourself nobody’s gonna build it for you just like that poop and I found a pleasure nobody’s going to build a for if you don’t do self so right guys that’s it live your life. Love and Lizards baby, love and lizards.

is getting all my material together.

20:00

I help promote him on Instagram. I’m always tagging
