Hey everybody. And welcome to UNHINGED with me Steve Lichtman today is a special episode called Grammys Unhinged.

0:11
as you all know the Grammys were on last night and well you know listen I’m a heavy metal and rock and roll kind of guy for the most part so maybe 30 years ago when it was 30 years ago to this year when Jethro Tull beat Metallica for Album of the Year. Now listen, it wasn’t my favorite Metallica album, but it sure is fuck was more metal than Jethro Tull. And I kind of wonder if that was the beginning of the end or the end of the beginning. Whatever it was, it basically said that rock and metal will never really take a stage at the Grammys, it’s more about pushing the the idea of what they consider to be music. The problem and I think this is a big problem nowadays is that the music isn’t really

1:00
Music you know, you can’t tell me that some of these pop stars should even be there because they’re not musicians. And the Grammys is about making music, not about performances. I wouldn’t think now, if it’s about performances. In that case, maybe you could put like the rock on Didn’t he used to hold a guitar and sing and dance in the middle of a wrestling ring. But he never want any Grammys for it. If it’s just about the performance, well, then maybe he should. Maybe he’s old one. Maybe they can retroactively give the rocket Grammy for his work there, you know, back in the 90s when he was jumping off the turn buckle. Now, the biggest thing that bothers me about it, is that there’s no musicianship at all. I don’t I don’t care what people say about cardi B rapping it’s not good. It’s absolute fucking garbage. And to think that that’s good rap. You don’t know what good rap is. If you want to listen to

2:00
Good rap when they actually had meaning, and it wasn’t just as vaping garbage that it’s become today. Well, you would listen to things like Run DMC, Sugar Hill gang, Grandmaster Flash. Now clearly, I’ve got a new york Atlanta, this being from New York in Long Island. So I’m going to have the bands that were local to me back in the day. If you’re in the West Coast, you got a whole different list of people that you’re probably saying, with the exception of a few like Run DMC, who made a really big Beastie Boys and a lot of the local stuff that we had here. Maybe didn’t hit it on the biggest stage of them all in the hip. Hop up. Boom, but still, man, every single one of them just would fucking destroy cardi b i could Big Daddy Kane How can you say that we have a world where there was a Big Daddy Kane representing rap and now it’s cardi fucking be

2:57
seriously man like the fact that people

3:00
People that are even willing to eat this shit up and buy it is this completely bananas to me? I don’t understand it. I’ll probably never understand it. You know, because I’m not a I’m not sitting there. You know, blasting. See 100 listening to whatever shitty new pop music you know, came out this week. Now instead I’m on I’m on Apple Music and I’m in the rock categories and the classic rock categories. And it’s even instrumentals. And you know, the metal Of course, now, even some of the you know, and listen, I listen to things that aren’t just rock and metal. It’s not like I don’t,

3:35
but I listened to groups and bands and musicians that actually play

3:43
instruments. I know instruments sound really

3:49
that’s a crazy word because why would people play instruments in the day and age of you know, your laptop being your band in a box and you could sit there

4:00
You could sequence it entire, you know,

4:03
EDM rave hit, you know,

4:05
like a marshmallow guy or new dead mouse and stuff like that. And listen, they’ve got a market, they’ve got a space, you know, they’re the embodiment more of what the freestyle music was from back in the day, and kind of just boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, and,

4:22
and doing their thing. And, and man, if that’s what you dig, that’s cool. We all listen to that stuff is kids growing up because married back in the old days, we didn’t have as much choice when it came to our music. You can have heard what you heard. It’s the old expression

4:37
you get what you get, and you don’t get upset, right? That’s what they tell the kids at school and back in the day it turned on the radio and that was all you got. You didn’t have the opportunity to use the internet bands promoting on social media, you know, just in the rock and metal scene alone. I find so many bands that back in the day we never would have this wouldn’t have existed and we’re listening to so you pirate radio at a jersey

5:00
know it’s like if it wasn’t on so you tuning in the middle of the night set like tapes record, you know, 90 minutes on each side or 60 minutes on each side, whatever it was.

5:09
Yeah that was your that was how you get your new music do you listen to that all week until the show would come on again a week later. Now you can have you cardi B in your ears. 450 different touch points throughout the week between social media

5:25
advertising everything. It’s just there. It’s just completely up your ass of invasive and the worst part is, is it’s fucking garbage. I know I keep saying it. Listen If you’re a huge and I don’t mean to break her. I mean listen, she’s a she’s a talented performer for what it is, you know? No, no, taking that away. There is a performance to this. It’s just not just on music. It’s not what the Grammys were all about. And what’s weird is because it sells right you look

6:00
Look 40 years ago at the Grammy’s there wasn’t metal that wasn’t anything heavy. There also wasn’t any rap.

6:06
So what did you have that you had old school rock and roll, you had jazz, you know, you had a lot different music that was available. And that was being talked about. And that was being promoted. And they all had one thing in common and maybe it wasn’t a full band maybe it wasn’t a full you know, even back then it wasn’t like you know, flames shooting up and it wasn’t Judas Priest in the 70s and 80s are made in or kiss or whatever, you know,

6:34
maybe it was just Sammy Davis Jr. and a piano or Dean Martin. Now I’m not huge fans I’m not going to pretend and bullshit you and say hey man, Listen, I’ve been listening to Sammy Davis Jr. All week. I haven’t at all

6:50
but at the end of the day he was talented musician. You know, these guys those old school cats were they were talented and what they did, whether it was their voice and you

7:00
An arguable all right well the voice of a rapper that’s that’s a talent to right there they’re talking real fast and or mumble rapping on whatever the fuck they’re doing and yeah you could you could argue it I mean you could definitely argue it but there’s really no musicianship to it. There’s no no rhyme or reason. Or you look at the lyrics of it. There’s, there’s zero value, you know. And this case is for everything, where there’s an exception. And look, even a Grammys does have some musicianship, and it’s still and it’s a genre that I personally don’t even listen to. And that would be country music. While I’m not interested in hearing somebody strumming acoustic and talk about banging a sister and a pickup truck.

7:39
I have no problem at all with this kind of music because at the end of the day, they’re playing instruments. Look at big and Rick, those guys used to come out on stage with Jesus Christ. What, 10 people out there performing everybody’s playing an instrument. They’re playing guitars, bass drums tambourine.

8:00
washboard, you name it, they brought people out. And the one thing they had in common was that not a single person on that stage was useless and untalented. Right, so even for me, a guy like me that the only time I’ve ever seen them was I saw the one guy, the one that was on apprentice years ago during Celebrity Apprentice, and, and he seemed like a super nice guy. And he raised the hell of a lot of money for charity. So, you know, hats off to him, man. I mean, he took his his superpowers of, of being a celebrity and being a musician and and did it for good. So once again, it’s musician in the country. People seem to typically understand music more than anybody else as far as what you’re going to be seeing on the Grammys in this day and age or in 2019, for that matter. Yeah, man. Listen, that’s it. At the end of the day, what do you expect me to say? You know, I’m a I’m a dude in a long haired rock and roll dude in his 40s driving around and SUV you really want me

9:00
ranking cardi B out my window on a warm spring day come on you and I both though you see that you look at that you go wow that guy He’s a fucking idiot because that’s what I would be thinking. And I can’t imagine that any of you would be thinking any less you might not want to say it I get that that’s why I’m here so you don’t have to say it and I’ll say it for you. That’s why I’m the unhinged one and it’s just another episode folks that’s it we’re done. thank you as always for coming to my show. I do appreciate it I really really do and it’s it’s you know, I’m very excited where we’re going with this I mean we haven’t even started with guess that’s still on the horizon. So you’re getting just me going bananas for the first little while while I figure things out and and start figure out not only how am I going to record the guests, but who exactly am I going to bring on and what are we going to do here? Because this isn’t a

10:00
town podcasts where I’m going to be talking about you know life in the town and talk to the local pizza guys and all that stuff and about that it’s about people to have an interesting story something that they want to tell me a tail they want to sit you know say and get out there for anybody listening that you’ve got a story you want to bring man bring the heat brother or sister you know you can reach me at unhinge pod.com on the website right to the contact page. Or you can go on social media pretty much everywhere at I Emma Lichtman and you can hit me up there as well. I just got business cards in today. So that’s a little side note super exciting. It’s you know, every little step, right? So so people have asked me about the side and about the podcast that know that I’m doing it and I always tell them and you never know if they go if they know all was it in the app I use or whatever. So I made a simple business card. It’s on social media. I posted a picture today I was kind of happy about it really easy. I just got small order done to start from staples just so I have something on me to hand to people. So if they want to say

11:00
Hey, how do I find the show? And now at least they can find it. That’s all I got. Guys. I’m going to be cutting this one off nice and tight. Alright guys, have a wonderful week and always baby.
